The European Week for Waste Reduction

European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) is an initiative aiming to promote the implementation of awareness-raising actions about sustainable resource and waste management during a single week.

The Thematic Focus for 2017 will focus on one of the easiest but very important ways to prevent waste: reuse with a twist of repair!

I made a presentation about pollution, climate change, waste management and 3R's in Vidisku high school. My aim to encourage students how become ECO friendly student in the school and at home as well. I shared my personal experiences what I learned in the nature school how to reduce, reuse and recycle the waste. Besides I read a lot about waste management and sustainable lifestyle because I very interested this issue. I hope after the presentation they start to do something for our environment and save the planet.

Halloween event

We celebrated the Halloween event with kids so firstly we went to the fishing and hunting museum.
They could learn about the animals all over the world and informed how to fish in the past. Secondly we went up to the Labanoras viewtower, the weather was pretty windy and cloudy and Labanoras visitor center as well. After that we visited the Paluse cemetery and we burned the candles. The cemetery was full of candles therefore it't was quite beautiful and peaceful.
Finally me and with the kids made the Halloween decoration  in the nature school and than we watched movie (hotel Transylvania), listened music and so on... It was a quite nice day for me, I really enjoyed the programs :)

outdoor time!

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of a special outdoor time.
German students visited our national park during their excursion through Lithuania. They started planning in spring and luckily a Lithuanian phd student recommended a stop in Aukštaitija. They were looking for a German guide and there I was.
As the weather isn’t really nice this year our options were limited. Nevertheless I planned an entertaining and educating program.
On our first day we took a hike from Palūšė (wooden church, burial mounds) to the botanical path. Even though it was raining most of the time the group stand the trip very well.
Second and last day was time for the big tour through the national park with all the popular sights. We started on the sculpture path and walked to Meironys to see a typical street village. After that the bus took us to the Trainiškis oak, Ginučiai water mill (where our lovely colleague Rimute took over), Ginučiai castle mound, Ladakalnis and of course the sculpture of the working man (let the bell ring!).

Lovely days with lovely people!

Thanks HS Weihenstephan!

Folk costumes presentation in the school

2017 is the year of national costume in Lithuania. Nation-wide there are a lot of folk events and concerts. We had the opportunity to represent our traditional costumes - German and Hungarian as well. In the school of Ignalina we showed students of 7th grade our this part of our culture. After an introduction and a movie about Lithuanian costumes and our presentation we added an active part for the students. They could colour some patterns or make bookmarks. Maybe we do this next week.

Boat event in Paluse

There was a quite big event in Palsue. This is the beginning of the summer season, and luckily we had a wonderful weather on saturday. The Boat event had a diverse program, like basketball, volleyball, concerts, "figuriada", fireworks and of course boat races. I was very happy because a lot of pepole came from Ignalina and surrounding villages. The village was full of life and we enjoyed it very much.
At the beginning of summer Paluse is pretty quiet, but day by day more and more tourists come for holidays. It was a very good opportunity to take part in the traditional boat races and celebrate with local people.

By the way Cihan visited us, actually he  is living in Utena. He is also volunteer from Turkey, we met on the arrival training and he is living the closest place among volunteers. So I guess it was  the best occasion to meet with each other.

the boat race, I did my best :)

Let's meet at the seaside!

Unbelievable but true: lithuanian summer finally arrived!
So what are you supposed to do? Right, enjoy a weekend with your EVS friends in Klaipeda.
How? Our coordinating organisation Deineta organised a meeting in Pajurio Regional Park.

As we are living quite far away we already arrived on friday. Lucky us spend an extra night in Klaipeda! Discover the nightlife and meet friends!

On saturday it was time for a EVS family reunion. We were invited to the visitors center in Karklė. We had the chance to talk about our experiences, projects and expectations. Nerijus and Leonas checked on us; if we get approppriate tasks or we are making progress in our learning process and of course if we feel usefull and well.
So a bit of reflecting and also inspiration for future projects.

After these few hours it was time to seize the day and go to the beach. Couldn't have been any better. Sun was shining, water was warm more or less and a light summer breeze.

Of course there has to be another night in the city! Enjoying some music and one or two drinks.

And in case you were wondering: we went also to curonian spit and got some amber!

All what's left to say is: Thanks guys for this awesome weekend! Hope to meet you again soon!

Museum evening in Ginučiai watermill

This week we took part in a presentation about own country folk costume. So We prepared some interesting facts and videos about traditional folk art. Sadly no one of the local people showed up, but anyways our colleagues with their families were there. We had a lot of fun, tea and cookies. We learned a lot about our own traditions and as well about Lithuanian folk costumes. It was a special day for me because my mother came to visit me. The presentation was a challenge for me because I never did it before. So all in all we had a very nice event we hope for the next event more local people will come.

First days

Labas!

Here is our Volunteer story in Lithuania, Susi from Germany and Zsani from Hungary. We arrived 1 month ago and are living at the nature school. Our working place is the national park centre in Palῡšė. We participated on some events, like Easter and cleaning events. We really enjoyed playing and painting eggs with children, they were very friendly. Events like these are good opportunities to learn about Lithuanian culture and habits. Also we hope that our cleaning events motivate people to care more about the environment.
